Ongoing, HELP CLEAN OUT AND REBUILD HOMES AFFECTED BY SANDY!
More than three months after Hurricane Sandy, thousands of New Yorkers are still living with mold. Respond & Rebuild helps Rockawayresidents get past a huge obstacle to rebuilding: mold removal. It’s physical work and can be a tedious job, but it’s so important that it’s done well, and you can do it! This is a free service we provide to Rockawayresidents affected by Sandy. We do outreach to find homes, provide a free assessment, and then bring volunteers to complete the work.
Your commitment to this work makes it possible for us to keep our appointments with families who have often been wait-listed, stood up by contractors, and turned down by insurance companies. When you arrive on time and work hard all day, you are helping us keep our promises to people who have already dealt with a tremendous burden over the past few months.
Sign up for a full day of work. Jobs are lined up in advance.
Requirements: Advanced sign up is required by 5pm the day before your volunteer day.
Please sign up on our website: Sign Up Here!
Volunteers just need to bring a bag lunch and wear a warm hat and warm clothes, and hard soled shoes such as work boots or camping boots.
Respond & Rebuild is a full-day of relief work. Volunteers need to arrive on time and stay all day. Our last safety training begins promptly at 9:30 AM.
On weekends, we offer a shuttle service to our base in Rockaway from the Howard Beach A train station at 103rd St. & 159th Ave. Shuttle pick up is promptly at 9 am. On weekdays, volunteers must use public transportation or provide their own transportation here. Bus service is running. Those finding their own transportation must arrive at the base no later than 9:30am.

Ongoing, REBUILDING HOMES IN THE ROCKAWAY'S
Friends of Rockaway in conjunction with the St. Bernard Project and Americorps NCCC has begun free, needs based, rebuilding of homes on the Rockaway Peninsula.
We are currently looking for volunteers that are willing to come put in a hard days work, want to learn a new skill and don't mind getting a little dirty.
Our days start at 9am and end at 4:30pm. We recommend you bring a lunch and water and a tool belt if you have one sitting around. We will have all of the tools you need here but if you have a favorite hammer feel free to bring it.
We can't do the work we are doing without the volunteers that are coming through our door. We hope to see you soon!
Requirements:
It's important that you are physically capable of lifting up to 50lb's all day. Possibly up and down stairs. Familiarity with power tools would be a plus but not a must. But it's important that you are comfortable and willing to learn how to use at least a drill and possibly a circular saw. We will provide training in the morning based on the work that we are doing that day and we are happy to answer all questions and demonstrate a skill until everyone is comfortable with the scope of work.
We will also provide hard hats, masks, gloves and eye protection when needed.
Days/Times: M-F, 9am-4:30pm, ongoing
